Performance horse breeding in Australia has gone ahead in leaps and bounds over the years. Increased accessibility to European genetics is expanding our local bloodlines, allowing Aussie breeders to produce horses comparable to anywhere in the world. And of course, we have the luxury of being able to raise our horses on land that helps bring out their best!

With spring heralding the start of breeding season, we take a close look at three studs – Mayfield Farm, Ryans Horses and Salisbury Dressage – alongside the frozen equine semen importers at International Horse Breeders, to see what’s on offer for those considering breeding or purchasing their own future star this season.

SALISBURY DRESSAGE

The upcoming breeding season is fast approaching and bringing with it some incredibly exciting opportunities for Australian breeders. Our stallion roster is one of the most exciting ever seen in Australia with our newly acquired Maracaná (by Millennium) and DeLorean (by Dancier) joining our resident stallions Toto Nation de Jeu (by Toto Jr) and Vittorio DS (by Vitalis). This unprecedented line-up at Salisbury Dressage heralds a remarkable era of possibilities, opening doors to an array of world-class genetics for Australian breeders.

“Australian breeders now
have an unparalleled chance…”

Maracaná and DeLorean, both internationally acclaimed and meticulously selected, bring with them a legacy of excellence that promises to elevate Australian breeding to new heights. These magnificent stallions embody a convergence of pedigree, athleticism, and temperament that is rarely found. Their addition to the roster represents an invaluable opportunity for local breeders to access superior genetics that can redefine the standards of equestrian excellence.

The emergence of such a comprehensive stallion line-up at Salisbury Dressage is a game-changer. Australian breeders now have an unparalleled chance to tap into a reservoir of world-class bloodlines, refine their breeding programs, and create a generation of equine athletes that can stand toe-to-toe with the best on the international stage.

The significance of this moment cannot be overstated. It’s a testament to the commitment of Salisbury Dressage to continuously push boundaries and explore new horizons in the pursuit of our developing breeding programs.

In parallel to our outstanding choice of stallions, we have a herd of incredible broodmares who come from some of the most iconic European families. A sample of the foals we are expecting include:

Blue Hors Baron x Foundation (motherline has produced Sandro Hit and Diamond Hit)

Revolution x Dream Boy (motherline has produced Serano Gold and Exupery)

Iron x Blue Hors First Choice (out of the mother of Glock’s Zonik)

So Perfect x Johnson (a daughter of Sisther de Jeu)

My Vitality x Johnson (motherline of President’s Jack Sparrow)

MAYFIELD FARM

Mayfield Farm takes pride in breeding and producing quality dressage and jumping horses with a focus on temperament to ensure that our horses find forever homes where they bring joy to their human partners.

“Stallion Mayfield Pzazz
has a wonderful pedigree…”

We focus on a few well performed mares, selecting stallions with proven performance. Our small numbers ensure each horse gets the special care they need to be reliable partners. Stallion Mayfield Pzazz has a wonderful pedigree (by Jazz) with years of competition at CDI dressage, retiring completely sound. He has great jumping technique, and a wonderful work ethic that is passed on to his progeny. He has produced high-level dressage horses, show jumpers to 1.40m, and plenty of quality horses doing the job they are asked by their amateur riders.

Stallion Kingsley Tarpania is by Lord Leatherdale, sire of Glamourdale, out of a Fürst Romancier mare who competed for The Netherlands at the FEI/WBFSH Dressage World Breeding Championships for Young Horses. Kingsley has a marvelous canter and is showing great capacity for the higher-level work. His foals show his quality and refinement. Whisper had a wonderful career including Australian Grand Prix Champion and has produced Grand Prix horses, including Limelight.

We are now focusing on jumping horses and have proven mares including World Cup competitor Finch Farm Cab Sav, and mare bloodlines including Clearway, Colman and Cornet Obolensky.

Stud principal Dr Kerry Mack is a second-generation horse breeder with 40 years of breeding experience. She is a rider who would like everyone to have the chance to have a horse that really wants to do the job, like Pzazz. She believes that the foal’s early experience can shape their relationship with humans, and this informs our handling. We have young stock for sale by Ibiza, So Perfect, Totilas, Kingsley and Vitalis, and will soon have foals by Jovian and Pzazz. Due to exceptional circumstances, we have broodmares for sale – an amazing opportunity to obtain quality stock.

Mayfield Farm is based in Whittlesea, Victoria. For more information visit Mayfield Farm on Facebook or call 0419 104 976. EQ
